WHO WAS RICHARD HALLIBURTON?
Richard Halliburton http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Halliburton, lived from 1900 to 1939. Coming of age just in time for the end of World War I, he died just before the outbreak of World War II; he lived his entire adventurous life in that span of years that saw the Roaring Twenties; the Great Depression the rise of Communism, Fascism and Nazism. He traveled a dangerous world shaped by the Treaty of Versailles.
Yet everywhere he went he found wonder enough to make a living writing articles for magazines back home and later books for popular audiences. He wrote 7 books, many of which were on the New York Times best sellers list. His name was once a household word, but today the world has pretty much forgotten Richard Halliburton.
Halliburton once registered as a ship, paid a fee of $.36 and swam the Panama Canal, he followed his dreams...
He disappeared in March 1939 as probably all adventuring travelers should while in the midst of one of his exploits, sinking while attempting to sail a Chinese junk, “The Sea Dragon” across the Pacific from Hong Kong to San Francisco.
For a first hand look at photos of the sites Halliburton visited, read the book
“Richard Halliburton’s Complete Book of Marvels”
Ask your local library (if they do not have it at that location, request it), or purchase a copy of the book at a local book store, order on line, (you may have to order from a book dealer), first published 1941, last published 1960.
Dear Reader, (excerpt from introduction of book)
When I was a boy in school my favorite subject was geography, and my prize possession my geography book. This book was filled with pictures of the world’s most wonderful cities and mountains and temples, and had big maps to show where they where. I loved that book because it carried me away to all the strange and romantic lands. I read about Egyptian Pyramids and India’s marble towers, the great cathedrals of France, and the ruins of ancient Babylon. The stories of such things always set me to dreaming, to yearning for the actual sight and touch of these world wonders.
May I take you there?
Your Friend,
Richard Halliburton
